Novo Mesto is situated in the southeastern part of Slovenia, near the Croatian border. The city was built on a bend of the river Krka. It is the most important city of the region Jugovzhodna Slovenija. The city was built in the 14th century at the instance of Duke Rudolf. From the 16th to the 18th century increased the economic influence of Karlovac. Because of this the economic life moved from Novo Mesto to Karlovac. The citizens returned to the countryside. Because new roads bypassed Novo Mesto and instead focused on Karlovac, the stagnation continued until the 18th century. In 1894 the city got a rail connection.

In the old town of Novo Mesto one can find an aristocratic main square, beautiful mansions, religious buildings and a typical city hall. Novo Mesto is a real cultural treasure, surrounded by the lush nature of the Krka valley.

Thanks to the numerous situlas, the city is one of the most important archaeological sites of the Hallstatt culture in Europe. Because of this, Novo Mesto got the nickname "City of Situlas". A situla is a bronze bucket that was used as urn.
A visit to Novo Mesto can be combined with a visit to many other attractions in the surroundings of the city like the castle Otočec, the settlement Kostanjevica na Krki and the monastery of Pleterje.
