PTUJ

Ptuj is the oldest town in Slovenia. The first traces of settlement are dating back to the New Stone Age. During Roman rule Ptuj was the largest settlement in the area. The city experienced its greatest prosperity in times of Roman domination. The name Ptuj has its origin from the time of Emperor Trajan, who granted the settlement the city status and called the city Colonia Ulpia Traiana Poetovio. Poetovio developed into an important military, commercial and administrative center.

In the 9th or 10th century a castle got built on top of the hill of Ptuj. Today one tower remains of this original castle. In the 12th century Archbishop Konrad of Salzburg ordered the construction of a new castle. Major reconstructions, in the period of the Renaissance and Baroque, left their mark on the appearance of the castle. Today the castle is a museum.

The city is an open air museum with well intact buildings, and a very atmospheric inner-city. Although Ptuj  is no large city, it is possible to linger here a whole day One can enjoy the many old and quaint streets and one can visit the castle. Furthermore, there are many pleasant squares and religious buildings. There are also many wineries.
