MURSKA SOBOTA

Murska Sobota is the regional center of Pomurska and is located 60 km north east of Maribor and lays a short distance from both Austria and Hungary. Murska Sobota is named after the river Mur but the city is laying next to its tributary, namely the river Lendava , Officially the town is known as Murska Sobota , but informally its usually referred as Sobota . The traditional German name of the city is Olsnitz , which is derived from the old Slovenian name Olšnica . The current Slovenian name is a translation of the Hungarian name Muraszombat . This was the official name of the city until 1919 . In Hungarian language means Szombat Saturday. Every week on Saturday there was a fair in the city.

Muraszombat was destroyed in 1605 by the troops of the anti - Habsburg Istvan Bocskai . At the current location , around the castle of the noble family Szapáry , the town was rebuilt . This castle dates from the 15th century and since 1936 it’s a regional museum

Today, Murska Sobota is a quiet city with an economy based on regional governance, light industry , trade, and spa tourism.
